Spondylolithesis

Your spine is made up of many bones called vertebrae. When you have spondylolithesis, this means that one of these vertebrae has slipped forward. The slip of one vertebrae forward can be seen in this picture.

The forward slip can be caused by a problem with the bones or by a problem with the joint between the two bones involved.

Spondylolithesis is more commonly found in adults than in children. Some of the causes of spondylolithesis are your genetics, the way that your bones grew, your posture, and if you have ever hurt your back. Some people who have this condition may never have any symptoms and therefore will never know that they have it. Other people may develop pain in their lower back. This lower back pain develops when you are standing in one place for a while, when you bend forwards, or when you bend backwards. The pain usually leaves when you sit or lie down.

Spondylolithesis can be aggravated by a jolt to the spine caused by things such as a car accident, a hit during a sport, or by lifting something heavy.
