Shin Splints

Shin splints are pain in the front or back of the lower leg caused by an excess of activity. The common site of shin splint pain is illustrated in the picture on the right. A person may notice this pain following exercises that they have not normally been doing. They may also notice this pain following a significant increase in the amount of exercise that they have normally been performing. This type of pain is common in runners.

The pain of shin splints can be relieved by resting the legs for a couple of days, or by applying ice to the painful area for 15 minutes, a few times a day, for the first day following the exercise. If the pain does not go away, a physical therapist can assess you and help to treat your pain.
