Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that travels from your lower back and down the back of your leg. It gives information from your brain to a lot of muscles in your leg and foot making it possible for those muscles to work. It also allows you to be able to feel things on most of your leg and foot. The picture on the right illustrates the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica is a generalized condition meaning that the sciatic nerve is irritated. When the sciatic nerve is irritated, it causes a pain, tingling, or numbness down its pathway and to the areas it supplies. The usual sciatica pain is in your low back, your buttock, and down the back of your thigh. This pain can vary from a slight annoying pain to an excruciating pain that stops you from walking and doing your normal activities.
