Osteoarthritis (OA)

OA is a disease of certain joints in the body. This disease is degenerative and progressive, which means it gets worse with age. It causes the surfaces of the joint that allow for smooth movement, to become rough. The first picture illustrates a normal hip joint with smooth bony surfaces. The second picture illustrates an osteoarthritic hip joint with rough bony surfaces. These joint changes cause the joint to lose mobility, become unstable, and feel very painful. Osteoarthritis can make activities that are normally done at work or at home very difficult and can therefore cause disabilities.
