Meniscal Injuries

The menisci in your knee sits on your lower leg bone (your tibia) and helps cushion the knee joint. The picture on the right illustrates the two menisci found in your knee joint.

If there is a tear in your meniscus, it will cause an abnormal rubbing on the inside of your knee joint, which can cause pain. The pain will normally occur during walking, going up stairs, squatting, and when getting out of the car. You may also feel like your knee occasionally "locks" on you during these activities.

A meniscal injury can be caused by a traumatic event such as falling, or it can be caused by many small injuries to the knee. As well, meniscal injures are common after any other knee ligaments have been injured.
