A joint is formed where 2 bones meet. The joint has many structures that hold
it stable during rest and during movement. Some of these structures are ligaments,
the joint capsule, muscles, and tendons.
A dislocation is when one of the bones of the joint is moved out of its normal
position. A pushing or a pulling force on one of the bones could cause a dislocation.
You are more likely to dislocate your joint if some of the structures that normally
stabilize your joint have been injured.

This picture illustrates a dislocation of the shoulder joint. This kind of dislocation commonly happens when your arm is raised up in the air like you are going to throw something and an unexpected force pushes your arm further backward. |
