Men: Sexual response is related to the level and completeness of the
lesion. The ability to get an erection is more likely in higher lesions than
lower lesions, and in incomplete lesions rather than complete lesions.
The ability to ejaculate is more likely in lower injuries than in higher injuries,
and in incomplete injuries than complete injuries.
Female: There is very little research addressing spinal cord injury
and women's sexual function. The menstrual cycle may be interrupted for a few
months following the injury, however after this it usually normalizes. The ability
to get pregnant is unimpaired, however women with a spinal cord injury should
be closely monitored throughout their pregnancy to decrease complications.
