Concussion
A concussion is a medical term meaning that there has been a temporary loss
of brain function. A force that jars the brain against the skull causes a concussion.
This causes damage to the brain tissue and therefore it needs time to heal.
Sometimes the damage will not heal and other parts of the brain need to be taught,
by physical therapy, how to compensate for these dead areas. Common problems
after having a concussion can be any of the following:
- fatigue -this extreme tiredness during any activities is quite often felt
in people post concussion
- decreased balance -this is noticed when doing higher level activities such
as sports
- dizziness
- decreased co-ordination
- headaches
- neck and back pain
- poor memory
- short temper
- decreased concentration
- difficulty reading
- decreased motivation
If you have these problems after a concussion, it is important to see a physical
therapist to help rehabilitate you back to normal. If someone who suffered a concussion
returns to their sport or other higher-level activities too soon, and without
the proper physical therapy, they are most likely going to get another injury.
