Stroke

A stroke is caused by decreased blood getting to the brain and supplying it with oxygen and nutrients. The decreased blood supply to the brain causes parts of the brain to die. A stroke is similar to a heart attack but instead of the heart being affected, it is the brain. Therefore, a stroke has the same risk factors as a heart attack: high fat diet, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, stress, and decreased activity.

When a person has had a stroke, parts of the brain die. A stroke is a medical emergency because the longer the brain does not get blood, the more brain tissue that dies.
