A bypass surgery is done when the fat blocked blood vessels cannot be easily cleared. This surgery involves taking an artery or vein from somewhere else in your body such as your leg or the inside of your chest. This artery is then sewn into your heart's blood supply so that blood can now go through this new artery and supply your heart muscle with blood and oxygen.
After angina, a heart attack, or bypass surgery, it is important to have a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise. This will decrease your chance of having another, and perhaps worse, heart attack. During activity your heart has to work harder, and since it has been damaged and is probably getting less blood than it is used to, you are at risk of having another heart attack. A physical therapist can help teach you what exercises and activities you should and should not do to increase the health of your heart. They will monitor your exercises until your heart is healthier, and make sure that you can do it safely and independently.
