Bronchiectasis caused by many lung infections or genetics (you were born with
it) can develop at any age but usually begins in early childhood. Symptoms may
not be obvious until much later.
Other people who have smoked a lot in the past may develop bronchiectasis later in life. This type of bronchiectasis is usually associated with bronchitis or emphysema as well.
Physical therapists can teach you about your bronchiectasis and how you can manage it at rest and during activity. They can also help you learn how to breathe easier and cough better. These things are important to increase your quality of life and help slow down the progression of the disease.
