Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

This is caused by pneumonia or by a direct trauma to the lungs. You are said to have ARDS when the pneumonia or trauma causes pulmonary edema or atelectasis to develop. The signs and symptoms of ARDS can take up to 48 hours after the injury to develop.

Physical therapists will see these people when they are in the ICU and as they improve in health and are transferred somewhere else in the hospital. Physical therapists can help these people breathe easier and get some of the mucous out of their lungs.
